Viewlio vs YouTube Studio: what each one tells you about retention

YouTube Studio shows you where viewers left a video. Viewlio is built to explain why they left and what to change next time. Here is what each one covers, and when Studio on its own is enough.

If you publish on YouTube, you already have a retention tool. YouTube Studio draws an audience retention curve for every video you upload, and it is free, accurate and built into the platform. So it is fair to ask what a separate tool adds.

The short answer: Studio shows you where viewers left. Viewlio is built to tell you why they left at that moment, and what to change in your next upload. This article covers what each one shows, where they differ, and when Studio on its own is all you need.

What YouTube Studio shows you

Open the analytics for any video in Studio and you get the core retention numbers:

  • Average view duration and average percentage viewed, which sum up how much of the video a typical viewer watched.
  • The audience retention curve, which plots the share of viewers still watching at each point in the video.
  • Key moments for audience retention, which picks out parts of the curve such as how many viewers stayed through the intro, and the points where retention spikes or dips.

Studio is the source of truth for this data. Every number comes straight from YouTube, and it costs nothing.

What Studio does not do is connect the curve to what was happening in the video. It can show you that a large share of your audience left around 2:41. Working out that they left because a recap started right after a scene cut is up to you, scrubbing back and forth between the graph and the footage.

What Viewlio adds

Viewlio starts from the same retention data, read from YouTube once you connect your channel, and lines it up against the video itself.

  • It finds the moments that matter. The hook, the steep losses, and the stretches where retention rises or holds flat.
  • It works out what caused each one. Every analysis reads the curve alongside your title, thumbnail and video metadata. A deep dive goes further and examines the footage, the audio and the transcript around each moment, frame by frame.
  • It gives you a specific change to make. Each report names the moment, explains what happened there, and ends with a concrete change to test in your next upload.

Beyond single videos, Viewlio also:

  • Shows channel trends across your deeply analysed videos, once your library is big enough to read a pattern from rather than one upload speaking for the whole channel.
  • Keeps a checklist of the tips you save from any report, so the advice is in front of you while you edit the next video.

When YouTube Studio is enough

Studio on its own is the right tool in plenty of situations:

  • Your videos are still small. Below a few hundred views, a retention curve is mostly sampling noise, and no tool can read a pattern that is not there yet.
  • You know your footage well and like digging in yourself. Studio gives you everything you need to line up the curve with the video by hand.
  • You want a quick health check. If the question is simply whether this video held viewers better than the last one, Studio's numbers answer it directly.

When Viewlio helps

Viewlio earns its place when the curve raises a question Studio cannot answer:

  • You can see the drop, but not what caused it.
  • You publish often and do not have time to review every curve against the footage.
  • You want advice grounded in your own channel, built from your own videos and your own audience, rather than generic tips.

How they fit together

Viewlio does not replace Studio. It is built on the same YouTube data, so the two agree on where viewers left. Use Studio for the numbers, and Viewlio for the explanation and the next step.

You can try it on the free tier with your own videos: sign in with the Google account that owns your channel, pick a video, and see what the report finds.

Questions

Does Viewlio use the same data as YouTube Studio?

Yes. Once you connect your channel, Viewlio reads your retention data from YouTube itself, so it is working from the same curve you see in Studio.

Is Viewlio made by YouTube?

No. Viewlio is an independent tool. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by YouTube or Google.

Do I need to upload my videos?

Not for a standard analysis, which works from the retention curve, your metadata and your packaging. Uploading the source file is only needed for a deep dive, which examines the footage itself. Uploads are included from the Starter plan up.
