TubeBuddy has been part of many creators' setups for years, and it includes a retention tool of its own. So if you already use it, what would Viewlio add?
The short version: TubeBuddy is a broad toolkit for running a channel, and its retention tool helps you see where viewers drop across your videos. Viewlio is built for one job, explaining why viewers left a particular video at a particular moment and what to change next time. This article covers what each one does and where they differ.
What TubeBuddy is built for
TubeBuddy works as a browser extension inside YouTube and YouTube Studio, plus a web dashboard. At the time of writing, its main features are:
- Keyword Explorer, with search volume, competition and difficulty scores, and tag suggestions.
- A/B testing of titles, thumbnails and descriptions on live videos, on its top tier.
- Bulk processing, for updating cards, end screens, descriptions and tags across many videos at once.
- Thumbnail tools, including a thumbnail analyser and generator.
- A Retention Analyzer, which breaks down how many viewers are still watching at fixed points (such as the 30 second mark) across your videos, so you can see where attention drops.
- Channel analytics on watch time and channel health.
TubeBuddy's plans and their contents change from time to time, so check TubeBuddy's own site for what each tier includes today.
What Viewlio is built for
Viewlio reads the retention curve of one published video and explains it.
- It finds the moments that matter. The hook, the steep losses, and the stretches where retention rises or holds flat, wherever they fall on the curve.
- It works out what caused each one. Every analysis reads the curve against your title, thumbnail and metadata. A deep dive also examines the footage, the audio and the transcript around each moment.
- It ends with a specific change to test in your next upload, tied to the moment it came from.
Viewlio does not do keyword research, A/B testing or bulk edits.
Where they overlap: retention
Both tools look at retention, but from different angles.
TubeBuddy's Retention Analyzer is a comparison across videos at fixed checkpoints. It is good at answering "do my videos lose more people in the first 30 seconds than they used to?" or "which uploads hold viewers best at the one minute mark?"
Viewlio is a close reading of one video at a time. It looks at the specific moments where the curve moves, wherever they fall, and connects each one to what was on screen and in the script at that point. It answers "why did a fifth of my viewers leave at 2:41, and what do I do about it?"
If you already know where your videos lose people and want to know why, that is the part Viewlio adds.

Which one do you need?
Choose TubeBuddy if you want one toolkit for the day to day work of a channel: research, testing packaging, and keeping a large back catalogue tidy. Its A/B testing in particular is something Viewlio does not do.
Choose Viewlio if your videos get clicks but do not hold viewers, and the curve leaves you guessing about the cause. That is especially true if you publish often and do not have time to scrub every curve against the footage yourself.
Use both if you want help with packaging and with what happens after the click. A tested thumbnail gets people in; fixing the moments where they leave keeps them watching.
You can try Viewlio on the free tier with your own videos alongside whatever you use today.
Questions
Does TubeBuddy have a retention tool?
Yes. Its Retention Analyzer shows how many viewers are still watching at set points across your videos, which is useful for spotting patterns such as a weak opening. It does not examine the footage to explain individual drops.
Can I use Viewlio and TubeBuddy together?
Yes. They do different jobs and do not get in each other's way. Both read your data from YouTube once you connect your channel.
Is Viewlio affiliated with TubeBuddy or YouTube?
No. Viewlio is an independent tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by TubeBuddy, YouTube or Google.
